We dressed her and set off... almost
Now the time had finally come... After we had made it to Brest, which unfortunately turned out to be a bit more difficult, as we had to leave a car behind on the way. As soon as we arrived we started to dismantle the steering gear. We liked the system itself, so we decided to replace only the pulleys, as the old ones were made of aluminium and were completely corroded. We had ordered six new plastic rollers from Germany and were very pleased that they arrived on time. As anyone who has ever worked as a craftsman knows, theory and practice are two different things...
When the pulleys were finally all in position and doing their new job beautifully, the steel side smiled as us, they ran over the pulleys. It is a six-strand steel rope which only consisted of three. As is always the case, we discovered it on a Saturday lunchtime, the sailmakers were closed and so we decided to replace stalseil with Dynema. This stuff is a plastic dream. Thanks to Dr. Albert Pennings.
So we spend six more days in Brest before everything was more or less ready. But than we felt safe to set sail... the first time.
And it was high time as our Swiss friends were already waiting for us in Douarnenez.
The evening before, we had a good meal, said a dignified farewell to our dear Brest friends and started for the first time, Sunday 4 August 7:34.
Au revoir Brest!
We listened to every sound during the first little turn from Brest to Douarnenenz, but the old lady didn't speak much and we were extremely happy.
So we spent the summer with dear friends and family, making little turns between Douarnenenz, Lorient, Belle Île, Île du Groix, Penerf Quiberon... and discovered great anchorages.
